Going to Mexico City on sunday- @Jesus
Hey guys,
I still can't believe it but this afternoon it was decided that I am going to Mexico DF on sunday... Unfortunately I can't go to Playa because I have to work in DF monday and tuesday and I will leave tuesday evening for Argentina. Why did I give all the Pesos I had left to my colleague who will join me in DF? Jesus, I will see YOUR city although I probably will not really see much of it as I have to work... still... I'll be in Mexico again and I am curious to see what little I will see.... Andrea |

Well, Tappy, actually I love to travel so I am not complaining
although the past months have been a little bit hard. This year is an exceptional one for me as far as travelling is concerned and I don't think that I will ever again be travelling THAT much. I will go to Mexico, Buenos Aires and New York in the next two weeks but I know that as far as Mexico and Buenos Aires are concerned this will be the first and last time I will ever have to go there for business. So I just enjoy!

You will be welcome, of course.
Weather has been tranquil. Some days it rains in the afternoon or late at night, but there has been some very bad storms now and then. But otherwise, it can be very sunny the rest of the day. You don't need warm clothes, a sweater would be enough (or even too much) and a light water-proof jacket just in case, as you are going to be locked (I presume) most of the day. Do you have any idea where are you staying (hotel, neigbourhood)? Is somebody picking you at the airport? is going to be very crowded as all the flights arriving from Europe choosed to get here in the afternoon. Lufthansa will arrive at 18:00 more or less, but before that is Air France, KLM, Iberia, all of the big Jumbo 747s plus some 757 & 767 from USA. Try to meet at a predetermined spot a little away from the arrival gate as all the guys with a sign waiting for passengers will be there (10 times as worst as Cancun airport). If you are taking a taxi it would be easier, just walk out of customs and go left, buy a ticket and you are ready. As you are arriving Sunday, I guess that pollution won't be a big problem and you would be able to see the city on your aproximation to the airport, is an amazing sight. On Tuesday night, I hope you leave late, as the view is incredible with all the city lights to say goodbye. Have fun. |

Hi Jesus, thanks for the info. I'll bring a jacket anyway as in Buenos Aires it's winter and a little bit colder than in Mexico.
I will arrive with the Lufthansa flight so I will probably be in the crowd... I stay in a hotel in Pedregal. Just tried to find out where this is as I just booked the hotel where my colleague is staying. Doesn't seem to be in the center of the city though....My flight on tuesday evening is at 7.40 pm so it might be dark by then. But I already know how impressing the sight is as when I came back from Playa I changed the plane in DF and it was dark when I started then.... Do you think it's worth to go to the city on monday evening? I am not yet sure I am too tired but it would be a pity to be in the city and really not see anything at all.... my colleague has other plans for monday so I am on my own then. Regards Andrea |

Highest on my priority list of things to do in Mexico City is the Antropological Museum, without a doubt. It's a world class museum, full of the most amazing pre-columbian artefacts from Mexico's many ancient civilizations: the Olmecs, the Aztecs, the Maya and more. Bring water and snacks, as the restaurant is ridiculously expensive.
If you have time, go to Teotihuacan, but that's a day trip... Buenos Aires can be quite chilly this time of year, so bring something warm, for sure. Have you been there before? |

Anna, thanks for the tips, but I arrive only sunday evening so I probably will have no time then to go to a museum. Hopefully I can escape from the office by 5 pm monday afternoon but I can't say for sure. If I had known earlier that I had to go there I could have organized everything differently but I've been asked only yesterday if I could come. James, thanks for the hint with the antique market. Unfortunately there are no flights which arrive early in the morning so I will not be able to go there.
In Buenos Aires I have some more free time as I arrive wednesday morning and have the rest of the day off and my flight ot New York on saturday is only at 9 pm so I have another day for visiting and exploring. No, I've never been to Buenos Aires before. Actually it's my first time in South America in general so I am curious of course. I will probably spent most of the time there with my colleague and he has been there before. But I plan on making a sightseeing tour on saturday morning so I have an overview.I will write down though all your suggestions. Maybe we are finished by 3 pm monday afternoon, you never know...

Huu, the Pedregal area is waaaaaay south of the city, more than 25 Km from the airport, is a nice area but there is not much around you can see on Monday evening.
All the museums in Mexico are closed on Mondays, a completely stupid thing, but is the way they do it. You could have gone to Frida Kalho's house or her husband's, Diego Rivera. I'm thinking about the Floating Gardens in Xochimilco, but is not fun if you go alone. Some evenings you can get a very romantic boat outing, but you will need a partner for that. Close to your hotel is a pyramid, Cuicuilco, but it will be closed, though you can take a look from the freeway, is in the oposite corner of the mall "Perisur". As I saw, you love to take architectural photos, so my best bet would be the University city, but you will need a car or somebody to drive you around as distances are inhuman. Maybe you can ask the concierge of your hotel for that kind of service. For your trip back to the hotel, leave with some anticipation as you are going to be far and sometimes traffic is crazy. Good luck. |

Jesus, thanks, for the infos. I guess museums are closed on mondays in most part of the world so that's nothing unusual.
I just got an email from a childhood-friend of my mother who is mexican and she will come and get me at the hotel on monday evening and show me a little bit around. It's always good to know locals. For the trip back to the airpaort I still had inmind what you wrote me about rush-hour and a lot of traffic when I asked for my vacation if I should go to the city or stay at the airport as I had several hours between my flights. So I will go early enough (and my colleagues and at the hotel they should be able to help me with an exact time). Thanks a lot all, as usual you have been very helpful!

My favorite things to do in Buenos Aires:
stroll around town (Playa de Mayo, Casa Rosada etc). take breaks in amazing art deco/jugend coffee shops, where everything (even the white-clad waiters, it seems) has been left untouched since the 1920's, when Argentina was one of the most properous countries in the world. La Boca - a colorful and artsy neighborhood, nice strolling. La Recoleta cemetery - perhaps a weird suggestion, but this cemetery is like no other you've seen, with the most elaborate and beautiful crypts of the wealthy and the famous families of Argentina. Tango of course. Great (and cheap) leather - jackets, bags etc - go shopping! If you have a couple of days off, my main suggestion is Iguazu Falls, which is definitely on the top-5 travel experiences ever. |

Well, I am getting started with packing again. It's tricky not to forget something when you go to three different temperature zones, countries and time zones.
Thanks again for all the info you gave me that has been helpful as usual. Anna, I will let you know what I did in Buenos Aires and whether I liked it. We have about one afternoon and one day off there so it's more free time in Buenos Aires than I have in Mexico. Unfortunately recently our travel guidelines for business trips have been changed and it's crazy what they have put in there (they were even thinking of making us come home for the weekend when we have to stay in New York over the weekend). So there is no way that I could leave for Mexico earlier or stay a few extra days in Buenos Aires (unless I pay the flight and THAT I can't afford ).Regards Andrea |
