Talking FORUM FUN FEATURE!! Tough Test 7

Tough Test 7

1. There is a pole in a lake. One-half of the pole is imbedded in the lake bottom, another one-third of it is covered by water, and 11 feet of the pole is out of the water. What is the total length of the pole in feet?

2. How many stars were there on the flag of the Soviet Union?

3. Re-arrange these letters to give the title of a 1970 movie featuring Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George.

BILL MET GIANT

4. What fraction is 8.5 percent?

5. Can you sing the MacDonald’s Big Mac ingredients?

6. “Dad, where have you been?” asked Mark.

“I’ve been up in the attic, son, replied Dad. “And do you know what I saw there? There was a big web with 26 spiders and flies in it.”

“How many spiders were there?” asked the boy with curiosity.

“Well, there was a total of 172 legs on the web, “ answered Dad with a smile. “Now you can find out how many spiders there were by yourself, can’t you?”

Can you help the boy find out how many spiders were in the web in the attic?

7. Bob weighs 160 pounds more than his sister, Diane. Their combined weight is 200 pounds. How much does Bob weigh?

8. What was “The Un-Cola?”

9. Name an eight letter word that has kst in the middle, in the beginning, and at the end.

10. You and a friend are planning on hiking separately and meeting at a lake neither of you have been to before. The map shows it to be a rugged, hilly area, with plenty of streams and dense forest. You’re confident you can find the lake, and hike around it, if necessary, but you anticipate limited visibility to be a handicap. Where should you arrange to meet to be sure of finding each other?

Why do I keep trying?

1) 66 feet

2) One... or Three...

3) Little Big Man

4) 17/200

5) Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun

6) 18 flies and 8 spiders

7) Bob is 180 pounds... making Diane only 20 pounds?? Yeesh.

8) 7-Up

9) the only 8 letter word I can think of with kst is backstab and I'm not even sure if that's one word or two and it doesn't fit the rest of the question anyway

10) At the top of the highest hill?

Don't need a geek...I'm a proud product of the lame American public education system, where multiple guess is deemed an accurate measure of knowledge .... took my SAT's in about an hour... approximately 3 hours after I left the keg party... scored 1320... the answer is "B"

We took ACT's up this way...
I took mine the morning after my 18th birthday...back in the day when we could party like fools at 18 because we had a 3.2 beer law...used to call it "The 3.2 Flu..."

Parked my T-Bird in the school parking lot early and left a sign in the window asking someone to please KNOCK and wake me up!!

Sorry, all, but I forgot to post the answers in the usual timely manner. Here they are. I promise to do better on the next quiz.

Tough Test 7 - Answers

1. Fraction of the pole in the ground = ½.
Fraction of the pole covered by water = 1/3.
Fraction of pole in ground, covered by water = ½ + 1/3 = (3+2)/6 = 5/6.
Fraction of pole out of the water = 1 - 5/6 = 1/6.
Thus, one-sixth of the pole (out of the water) is 11 feet.
So, total length of the pole is 6 X 11 feet = 66 feet

2. One

3. Little Big Man

4. One twelfth

5. Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame-seed bun.

6. Assuming 6 legs for each insect, 26 insects will have 156 legs. However, there are 172 - 156 = 16 extra legs. It is important to note that spiders have 8 legs and flies have 6 legs. So, there are 2 extra legs per spider in the web. Thus, the extra 16 legs belong to 8 spiders

7. Bob weighs 180 pounds.

8. Seven-up

9. Inkstand

10. Lakes may have numerous inflows, but no lake has more than one outflow. Arrange to meet at the outflow. It was stated that you could walk around the lake, so presumably you will be able to find a place to cross the outflowing stream if necessary.

Tough Test 7 - Answers

4. One twelfth
Sorry, Bumber Boy, but I have to disagree with you on this one (surprised?)... One twelfth (1/12) expressed as a decimal is .0833 (repeating 3's)... which is 8.33 percent... 8.5 percent is .085 which is 85/1000 which reduces to 17/200.

Please tell me I'm right because my kids are fixing to come in here and for the rest of the day, you know I'll be completely wrong about everything....
