Bus from Cancun to Merida to Playa del Carmen

Hi!
I'm arriving next monday in Cancun, staying there for two nights and then have two days, before I have to be in PDC. Is it a good idea to go to Merida? Which bus company should I choose? I'm looking for one, that is not too expensive?!

Thanks for your help!

Merida is a very nice colonial city and well worth a visit. Be warned that Merida will be very very hot indeed this time of year, as it is inland. It's a 4-5 hour bus ride from Cancun to Merida and about 5 hours from Merida to Playa del Carmen. There are many buses and companies that run these routes; all are good, just make sure you get a direct first class bus with AC. Just go to the bus station in Cancun the day before you want to leave and check the schedule and get the ticket.

Nice things to do in Merida:
  • take a horse-and-buggy ride through the city (try to forget how skinny the horse is...)
  • visit the small but very interesting antropological museum, located in a stunning colonial building
  • browse the markets; buy a hammock and a guayabera (the nice cotton shirts with embroidery down the front)
  • stroll around town
  • visit colonial churches
  • take a day trip to the Mayan ruins of Uxmal, Labna and Sayil
  • take a day trip to the beautiful delta in Celestún; lots of pink flamingos

My favorite hotel in Merida is Grand Hotel, an old art deco hotel in downtown. Cool and affordable.

Delmy & I lived in Mérida for almost a year around the time our son was born. Nice place, and different flabor than here, most definitely -- probably what people would label with the word authentic. I'd agree with Anna on it being quite hot, however, and would also recommend Uxmal.

In Merida don't miss:
- ice cream at La Reyna de Montejo, made on site. They are located on Paseo Montejo, one of the main avenues.
- mercado de comida Santa Lucia (or Santa Ana), close to downtown, there you will find the authentic Yucatencan Food: panuchos, salbutes, relleno negro, papadzules, tacos de cochinita, some seafood dishes, etc.
- Some bakeries will have buns stuffed with cream cheese or other goodies.

Also, here is a link of the Tourism board of Mexico

My 9 yo son cried the whole carrige ride because of the conditions of the horses, I tried to explain to him that our horses are just OVERWEIGHT! It diden't work.
Merida is a must see and worth the visit...we love it there. Take a hop over to Uxmal, also not to be missed.

Dittos to all of the above.

I’ll be there in December. It is a little hot and humid right now, so be prepared.

And as Anna corrects my small technical errors (which I do appreciate). The hotel we all like is the Gran Hotel (no D) . This historic old hotel is our favorite place to stay in Merida when my wife and I need a break from the in-laws.

The other must do, is to eat the very best genuine Yucatecan food. DO NOT MISS Los Almendros. They have a nice easy to use picture menu, and the best food on the planet. You can also find Los Almendros in Cancun, but you will not find any food like this in Playa. I’ll be eating at both restaurants in December. The Merida establishment is at Parque Mejorada # 493 x 57 ask for directions at your hotel.

I've been trying to get info on this hotel for an overnight stay during my Playa visit in November...

Anyone know how to get in touch with them or know their URL? I can't find anything on the internet although it is highly recommended by a few trusted individuals on this site.

Thanks in advance

Quinn

I suspect the reference here is for the Gran Hotel in Merida? If so, that search should provide you some contact info.. Cheers!

There is also the new TURIBUS by ADO (i guess) which makes a tour though the city. And Dzibichaltun definitelly worth a visit (only at 15 minutes from Merida) a very nice archeologic zone with a crystal cenote where you can swim.
There is also Progreso at 20 minutes from the city.
