Hopefully, I didn't screw any of this one up, or maybe finding my errors is part of the test, H-m-m-m-m?
Tough Test 8 1. Joe loves to create confusion. One Tuesday, he sent an E-mail message to his secretary stating, “I’ll be back in the office three days before one week after the day after tomorrow.” When will Joe be back? 2. What language was most of the Old Testament written in? 3. If a wood chopper gets 50¢ for cutting a log into two pieces, how much will he get for cutting a log into six pieces? 4. What 1980 box office bomb starred Olivia Newton-John as the reincarnated Greek muse Terpsichore? 5. The speaker was so boring that one-half his audience left after a few minutes. Five minutes later, one-third of the remainder left. Ten minutes later, one fourth of the remaining group made their way to the exits, leaving only nine people in the lecture theatre. How many people were in the audience at the beginning of the presentation? 6. Which side should a ten-pin bowler facing a three-seven-ten split hit the three-pin on, the right or on the left? 7. Sunseekers came over to spend his holidays at my condo in Playa del Carmen. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time...and I even earned a few cervezas. Every day, we would play a game of chess (Hey...it could happen!). Whoever lost the game owed the other a beer. After the last game we played (That was the day Tommy was to leave), we counted up the number of games each of us had won and lost. Wow! I had won more than him. So, he handed over 27 Dos Equis Ambar...though he himself was the winner in 5 games. How many days did Sunseekers spend at my condo? 8. Who gushed, “Tastes great, mom!” when swigging 7-Up in his first national television commercial, in 1980? 9. A truck is six feet, plus two-thirds of itself long. What is the length of the truck? 10. What is the northernmost national capital in mainland Europe? |

Reasoning for #1:
“I’ll be back in the office three days before one week after the day after tomorrow.” Said this on Tuesday.... day after tomorrow is Thursday... one week after that is next Thursday... three days before that is Monday... Reasoning for #3: If he got 50 cents to cut the wood into two pieces, that meant he was getting 50 cents per chop (one chop = two pieces of wood; two chops would make 3 pieces of wood, etc); so if one chop = 50 cents, then cutting the log into 6 pieces would require 5 chops X 50 cents per chop = $2.50 How did you get #7, the question mark on my answer meant it was just a guess And you're probably right about Helsinki; geography is not my strong suit.... |

My goodness, but you're a patient lot. Okay, here's the answers I have in my files. Mind you, based on my performance of late , they are suspect.
Tough Test 8 - Answers 1. The Monday of the following week. 2. Hebrew 3. One cut yields two pieces, while five cuts would yield six pieces. He’ll would be paid 5 X 50¢ = $2.50. 4. Xanadu 5. Nine people were three-quarters of the audience before the last group left, so before the last exodus, there were twelve people in the auditorium. Those twelve were two-thirds of the crowd after the first group left, so there were eighteen after the first departure. Those eighteen were one-half of the total audience, so the lecture began with thirty-six people in attendance. 6. The right side. 7. Sunseekers had won 5 games. Since I received 27 cerveza, I must have won 27 more games than Tommy did, so I had won a total of 32 games. Thus, the total number of games we had played was 37, and since we played a game each day, Tommy had stayed at Casa Bumper for 37 days. 8. Wayne Gretsky. 9. 2/3 of the truck’s length, plus 6 feet, equals 3/3 of the truck’s length, so 6' is 1/3 of its length. The truck is 3 X 6' = 18 feet long. 10. Helsinki, Finland |

#1 Today is Tuesday. Tommorrow is +1, Day after tommorrow is +2, day after day after is plus 3 days or Friday. 3 Days before Friday is......Tuesday.
#7 the 37th day you played your last game of Chess and SunKeeper left, so by your own statement, he did not stay that day. That means he stayed 36 days, played one more game on the next day and left!. The rest I will conceed. |

As for #7, I won't argue with you on that one. As far as I'm concerned, it could go either way. You are correct in your very literal interpretation of "stay" so I can't fault you. I think you'll agree though, that if the wording had been "visited" the answer of 37 would be unequivocal? Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto. (I can't wait for your reaction to the most recent Saturday Night Semi-Alive test. I suspect you'll find it a bit more of a challenge) |
