Xpu-Ha - like Xel-Ha with luxury rooms?

I'm a confirmed Mexico junkie in desperate need of a fix - haven't had one for 2 years!

Last trip was to Barcelo Maya Beach, which we absolutely loved. Boyfriend and I agreed we would go back this October, but I hear that there's construction on the North beach, past the Dive hut. Since that secluded strip of beach was one of the things we loved best about Barcelo, we've decided not to ruin the memory, or take a chance on building site noise.

Decided on Xpu Ha Palace instead, so I researched it to death. I read 2 comments about scorpions in the room and I understand it's in the "jungle" so you take certain risks.

We're fairly adventurous, so I was almost ready to book it, but I came across a review on tripadvisor.com about a snake dropping through the palapa roof of someone's room while they were in bed! Of the 200-odd reviews I read, this seems like a one-off, but it's scared the c**p out of both of us!

I have a few concerns about walking round at night too. Am I right in imagining Xpu Ha is a lot like Xel-Ha with the snorkeling, winding paths, wildlife, etc? I've been trying to imagine walking through Xel-Ha at night (possibly a bit drunk!) to get an idea of whether or not I'd be OK with it.

Are the paths at Xpu-Ha lit at night? Are there any main, paved walkways, or is it all windy-through-the-jungle?

I would really appreciate any advice you can give me! Thank you.
