"Dressing" for dinner at Riu Palace?
Haven't seen anything on this subject yet...need some input. Are cocktail dresses (not formal) for dinner okay, or is that considered overdressed? The other choice is capris...

Yes, you would be fine with a cocktail dress at the Riu Palace.
Many folks enjoy a relaxing evening with a nice beverage and a smoke (or cigar) out in the courtyard after dinner, and the entertainment in the adjacent theatre...are all perfect for a nice dress... While we did not dress for the buffet as well as we did for the other restaurants that need reservations, we ran the gamut from nice khaki shorts in the buffet to more of a dressy casual...just depends on your mood. You will see the range of attire at meals, I assure you. We went in December and it wasn't chilly at night...but we saw some very light shoulder throws, etc... jobob...your turn! Cocktail dress would be fine. Don't remember them so much at dinner but I was too busy looking at all the food. Man, I must be getting old. Certainly saw them for the pre-dinner cocktails in the lobby lounge though. And did you notice how well their ventilation system worked? Sat next to cigar smokers and couldn't smell a thing.
My wife wore sundresses - long and short, slacks or wraps. I know this trip she'll be taking capris as well. 88 days and we'll be hitting the Caribbean. When you going Libby? Bob |

We're leaving 9/18...but it seems like forever! We're celebrating our 15th anniversary that week, so I'm looking for a nice, romantic place for dinner...probably in town?
We haven't been there for over 3 years...I'm sure things have changed just a little!! |

Hi Libby, when there's nothing special for dinner going on at the resort one night we're going to go to Yaxche. Have looked at their website several times and it looks great. You can find it under "directory" at the top of this page.

I ate at Capt. Bob's when I was in town last May. It's pretty close to the Tequila Barrel, well, within stumbling distance anyway. Nice guy the Capt. was too. Poor Miss Lonnie was crispy french fried from too much sun and he went out and had somebody cut her a piece of aloe and brought it to the table!
Anyway, it's a very nice, romantic place. Candle lit dark and they have booths that are perfect for cuddling. Not that Miss Lonnie and I cuddled mind you! You can eat inside or outside in the garden area. They make a fantastic ceasar salad tableside...but they use mustard which really freaked me out as I HATE mustard. I could taste it but the whole salad was so good, I didn't much care. Had a giant margarita with a floater of Gran Marnier, I think I actually had to two come to think of it. For dinner, I told Capt. Bob to pick any fresh fish and "do whatever with it". Wish I could remember "what he did with it" but I know it was good and came with fresh steamed veggies. We didn't have dessert as we were then late for the Playa Info meeting at the Tequila Barrel, where everyone else was even later than us! So yes, it's a good place to spend an occasion. |

I hate to disagree
with all the nice folks who responded but IMO you'd be a little overdone in a cocktail dress at the Riu Palace... We stayed there 3 times and very rarely did we see anyone that elaborately dressed... And the ones we did see were older (much) European women...Some younger women wore more sexy apparel, low cut tops, flimsey tanks, etc. (you get the point )I wore nicer dresses (not cocktaily) when we ate at Sir Edwards but I wore cotton sundresses or summery slacks and capris with colorful tops when eating at the buffet... Well, whatever you wear, you'll have a great time ... LIZ |

All right, when all else fails, go to the boss. Just asked my wife and she agrees with Liz. She does not remember seeing anyone in a cocktail dress and it might be a little overdressing.
Oh, and thanks Shammy but still think I'll still try Yaxche one night. Bob |

I am totally amazed at the number, and quality, of the responses I'm getting off one little post!! You all are so nice to supply all this information!
I'm definitely going to find Capt Bob's and take my husband there...I have also heard of a club that is hot for salsa and merengue. I think it's called "Mambo's", and they offer dance lessons. Has anyone tried it? By the way, I have never heard of tipping at an AI (except for the maid-we do that anywhere) but if that's the "thing" to do...I'm taking extra pesos! Again, thanks for the info ![]() |
