Tough Test 9
1. The villa you rented in Playacar II was wonderful, but unfortunately, the electricity was not turned on when you arrived. Your wife wants you to light the pilot on the gas stove so she can get dinner started, your daughter wants you to light a candle, and you want to light the fireplace to get the dampness out of the house. To your family’s dismay, you discover there is only one match in the house. What should you light first? 2. What city is home to the famous English newspaper, The Guardian? 3. Your friend takes four cards: the Ace of hearts, King of diamonds, Queen of clubs, and Jack of spades. He shuffles them and puts them in a stack, then gives you four clues. 1. The suits alternate by colour. 2. The heart is not the first or second card. 3. The spade is not the third or fourth card. 4. The King is directly over the Queen. Can you determine the order of the cards from top to bottom? 4. What plant is associated with the Sunday before Easter? 5. In a world chess tournament, 100 players were entered to compete. Since all but one had to be eliminated, what is the minimum number of games that had to be played before a winner could be declared? 6. How many propellers were there on The Spirit of St. Louis? 7. What is the difference, money-wise, between a half-dozen dozen dollar bills, and six dozen dozen dimes? 8. Which one of Aesop’s fables carries the moral, “People often begrudge others what they cannot enjoy themselves.”? 9. This is a story about a girl. While at her mother’s funeral, she was introduced to a young man she had not previously met. She found him to be a truly amazing individual and was extremely attracted to him. She was determined to continue what she hoped would grow into a close relationship, but unfortunately, he left the function while she was otherwise involved. She quickly realized she had neglected to ask him his name, nor did she know any other details about him. No one else at the funeral was able to provide her with any information as to his identity. A few days later, the girl murdered her sister. Question: What was her motive for killing her sister? 10. Whose old police pals on TV’s Barney Miller were Foster, Brownie and Kleiner?
