I'm almost ALWAYS on a budget, and that's all I'm going to say about THAT.
Ditto Ginger....we scrimp and save and sacrifice so we can make our yearly trip to Mexico and stay in our three star hotel. But yes- when you COMPARE our bank accounts and lifestyles to poor people ANYWHERE, not only in Mexico, we could be considered 'rich'.

Do I feel guilty about that? Nope. Do I feel LUCKY? Sure, of course I do! I am very lucky.

I am with you Nerak, we leave nice tips when we are there if we get good service, not because we feel obligated or guilty. Start giving people big tips money for just doing their jobs in a service industry, soon enough you get mediocre or poor service.

I am also not going to buy something that is ridiculously overpriced without bargaining, politely, for it. :p I have been ripped off enough times when I was an inexperienced traveler, I have learned my lesson. Pay a fair price, and everyone wins.

As far as the woman asking for another ten percent discount, I don't think it was really very NICE of her, but she was well within her rights- so what? The man could always say no- and if he stood to lose too much on the transaction, I would hope he would have refused her request.

I feel bad for this woman. She only got a $15 discount on a $180 purchase, and here she is getting flogged for it. In the situation given, a 10% disount seems perfectly reasonable.
Gerald, if I were to book spanish lessons for 12 people, all at once, I'd be surprised if I couldn't negotiate a little bit of a break on price (irregardless of how much spanish lessons here at home cost).

When we're all done beating the hell out of this topic, can we move on to something lighter and fluffier?? Like POLITICS and RELIGION????

Okay Karen, here goes...

Who does everyone want to win the next US election! My vote goes to Kerry....IF I could vote that is.

It would be interesting to see how many people from countries other than the USA, would vote for Bush...anyone?

Just trying to make for some interesting conversation. I wasn't aware of all the rules and regs, it seemed like going OT was an accepted practice, hell, even ENCOURAGED in some, guess I was wrong. Maybe only if you are an accepted regular.

I agree with you Rissask . . . from this side of the border Bush kinda looks like a madman, and a dumb one at that! Not that any of our leaders are great examples though . . .

OH, don't open THAT can of worms! I don't know about in the states, but with the way we pay our taxes up here in Canada, spanish lessons don't cost us very much at all when we take them through University or open learning!

Yikes!!! Sorry, Rissask!! Didn't mean to do that to ya!!

From what I've seen, I've been under the impression that politics was a "no-no" since I once saw a thread closed down for it. But what the hell do I know.... (usually not a helluva lot).

By all means.... Discuss!! Discuss!! After suffering through a debate over Kerry/Bush that I heard Tuesday night at my bowling league, I'll sit this one out for sure

Why was this within her rights? The fact that a person has the ability to open their mouth and ask a question does not mean they have the right to ask the question. The example of sexual harassment that Steve gave while extreme is a perfect example. There are numerous examples of questions that can be asked but are inappropriate.

I would equate this to my going to the grocery store, having the cashier ring up all of my items and then ask for a 10% discount. A grocery store is just not an appropriate store (in the US at least) to try and negotiate a price.

I hate the fact that every thing is now negotiable. I am not just refering to Mexico, but the US and other places as well. I resent that when I go to purchase electronics or certain other items, I am shown a "sucker" price, and then you have to negotiate from there. As I have stated previously, I prefer spending my dollars at establishments which provide a reasonable price to start with and there is no need for negotiation. It is this concept (I belive) that make places such as Sam's Club so popular. You walk into the store and you feel as if you are getting the best price possible.

Please no politics. There is just no need to discuss that topic on this forum. There are plenty of places you can go on the internet to discuss politics.

The only thing we should speculate on is the future path of hurricanes.

Okay, I overreacted, I apologize Karen.

Never mind about the politics. What IS the right forum? Not on this site I guess huh.

And you are saying that a person doesn't have the RIGHT to ask this? Of course they do, and the cashier also has the RIGHT to tell them where to go!

It is RUDE, as I said, but she certainly has the RIGHT to ask....I hardly think it is comparable to telling someone they have nice tits or something do you?
