Don't worry, the hurricane is scheduled to arrive on Sept. 30.
Seriously, if you can reliably predict the weather that far out you would be a rich man. The best option is to follow the activity on a good weather website. Here is a link to one. http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/ |

oops that was a bit flippant wasn't it?
From what I have learned about the hurricane season if this one misses then there's a possibility of another coming during. Hurricane season is September to December isn't it. Who knows? The weather and storm advisories only get so much notice themselves! My advice. Take out holiday insurance. |

I would hazard a guess that your insurance only covers you if you are advised by the travel company or airline to cancel. Not sure if they pay out cos u wont like the bad weather. Usually only for sickness in the family or a death or something tragic. I can tell you are pretty worried but it is all chance. The weather could change, it could be perfectly acceptable for you to fly only for it to turn for the worst three days after arrival! Very unpredictable weather is.
I myself have no insurance..... for flights or hotel. Silly me. I fly out to PDC next Thursday 16th and have my fingers crossed. My friend flies tomorrow and as yet nothing has been posted telling them to stay away. it's a descision only you can make

One of my most memorable experiences in Playa was during a spell of bad weather. While dining with my husband at Yaxche, it started to pour. We had been seated outside in the garden by the "fountain", our favorite table BTW. Just as we were moving to the bar for a cocktail, it started to come down hard. Minutes later, all the power was out and dozens of tourists were left wondering how to pay for dinner with no credit card access.
The rain showed no sign of letting up but we headed right out into it and around the corner to Posada Freud. The streets were flooded, we were soaked and laughing our a**es off. We got back to our room which overlooked the bar at Siesta Fiesta. A band had been playing for the pleasure of the dining crowd. Candles were lit, drinks were served and the band played til the wee hours. When I awoke the power was back. That was my best Playa night, yet.

Kbb964 is correct. Travel insurance will not cover a cancellation because you "fear" bad weather for the trip. It either has to be a cancellation caused by illness, an illness or death of an immediate family member, or by action on the part of the airline and/or resort. I would relax and everything will probably be OK. Last edited by Mark in STL; 09-08-2004 at 11:34 PM. |

I believe it depends on what type of trip insurance you have -mine does cover rescheduling my trip for any reason I want.
2 years ago (my first trip to Cancun) we were scheduled to go in October. There had jsut been a hurricane (sorry can't remember which one) in September - a few weeks later we were scheduled to go. There was a tropical storm brewing and headed right towards Cancun again - we kepting watching the weather channel trying to decide if we should cancel or not - afterall it was our first trip without the kids in years and of course we wanted it to be PERFECT. I made my travel agent crazy with my phone calls for the two days prior. I called the hotel (Omni) and kept asking the front desk what the weather was like and expected for the next few days. The night before we were leaving (still not packed at 12 midnight with a limo pick up at 5:00 a.m) we decided to cancel - did not have trip insurance but rescheduled at a slightly higher rate. Anway the weather ended up being ABSOLUTELY PERFECT for the time we cancelled!! In hindsight we should have went but we really had no clue. We have gone back to Playa last year (with insurance) - no problems and are planning to arrive Secrets on 9/29. I will keep an eye on the weather forecasts but unless there really is something heading directly there I would not cancel. |

Most insurance policies offered by vacation companies (not outside companies like Travel Guard) do not let you cancel for "weather fears". Companies such as Apple Vacations and Travel Impressions are "cancel for any reason" so you don't even HAVE to tell them why as long as you do it before the day of departure. However, if your destination is predicted to be in for "a direct hit" (not a "brush by") from a hurricane, they normally WILL let you cancel or reschedule without penalty. But it's usually only 24 hours before that the NHC knows exactly where a hurricane will hit so that's where the "less than 24 hours before departure" cancellation because of a hurricane can be of help.
