What kind of car would you rent if...

What kind of car would you rent for the day on Cozumel with 6 adults? Or, would you even rent a car? Hire a taxi or scooters? I have read so many scary things about the scooters, I am not sure about that one...
Thanks a lot!

Personally, I would rent 2 Jeeps. Can usually get them for around $45. No way would I get on a Moped in Coz.

One caveat about the jeeps. I recently checked the price and with added insurance, it goes up to $70. Credit card companies often will not cover jeeps through their "free"collision insurance when you charge it on the card.

We got mopeds and had a blast. A full tank will take you around the island twice. If you rent a jeep and are just going sightseeing you will be done really quickly. The mopeds in czml proper can be fun also because they are so much easier to get around on as well as parking. But once you head out of town there is actually a road right next to the main road. One is for mopeds only the other is for cars only. Once you get out even Further the moped road joins the main road as one. We would hook up with others on mopeds and have a moped gang. It was so much fun. Just dont plan on taking a bunch of stuff. If you do make sure the person on the back has a backpack to hold your stuff. We had a basket on the back that held ours. We had to leave a $50 deposit and we got a big moped for thirty bucks. We got the moped from one of the guys pushing rental cars and jeeps on the ferry ride from Playa to Czml. The only thing is that we had to return ours by 6 pm. But we started around eleven and made it around the island stopping at 6 or 7 places enjoying the view and tequilla shots.

My preferred car on Cozumel is a VW Bug (in your case, 2). Sure, their tiny and beatup, but they are cheap, and no worries about scratches or dents. Small and easy to manuever, plus you can roll the top down when the weathers nice. I wouldn't want to be driving one for the whole week, but they are kind of fun for a day.

I definitely ditto the vw bug idea. Cheap and fun. Had no problems with Smart Car. It was only 20 bucks with the coupon from their website (last December).

I have done both. If you have never rode a scooter, then maybe skip it and go for the bugs (get the convertable...your in Mexico...live it up!) Last time in June I rented a scooter (having been to Coz twice before and knowing all the one ways!). We got a bigger one and my son and I zipped all over the island no problem...him riding in front of me). We spent time in town and on the windward side. Awesome...but watch out...the Iguanas will run out in front of you and thats a pretty big bump...and gosh, they are so cute! Just use good sense and watch the street directions! Oh, wear your helmet! We did see people without getting pulled over!

The only time we rented a topless bug it poured on us, but this just made the trip that much more memorable. At least we had a windshield though unlike most mopeds ive seen.

We're going to pick up a rental car at the airport. Is it best if we secure one before we leave or should we wait until we get there? We really want to be able to listen to music and have gotten good tips on how to do that with a portable CD player, so it needs to have a radio.
