Best Small Hotels

Hi everyone!

I'm certainly enjoying this forum and feel like I've stumbled upon a treasure when I found it on Google. James and Anna (& everyone else), you all provide such a valuable resource! We've read our 2004 Frommer's book (well, hubby has from front to back) and done lots of internet searching but it's so wonderful to find a forum with such nice folks with lots of great firsthand advice.

I can't wait to for this trip so that hubby and I can escape phones (and yes, even computers as much as I love 'em), family duties and the reality of life as it is (and a good one) to seek new adventures. I am always feeling so rushed these days.

And on that note, I can't seem to remember where I read about various small hotels. I remember somebody singing the praises of Hotel LaTortuga and some others.....and we do have the maps from Mapchicks that we've been checking out. I would, however, appreciate and love the personal input of all you Playa "posters" who will share info about your favorite small hotels in Playa. So I hope you don't mind that I've started this new thread.

This is our first trip to Mexico and we are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary on November 3rd! We are spending our first 5 days between Chichen Itza, Valldolid and Merida and will be in Playa on our anniversary for those last 5 or 6 days. We don't mind splurging a bit on a hotel in Playa, but would rather spend our money on shopping & lots of fun times, since we'll not be spending too much time in a room. Scott, thanks again for the tips on wedding vow renewals. We're still working on our plans for that.

Thanks again!

P.S. I'd also like to know which ones not to go to.

You have all the tools you need to find a perfect place to stay in Playa. Start by checking out the Hotels listed under the Trip Planning tab at the top of this page. You can then use your Mapchick map to check out the exact location. If you are curious about one of the hotels on the map, use the search function to see what the fine forum folk have said about it in previous threads. There is so much information!! You are going to hear alot of good things about a nice little hotel on the beach called Playa Maya. Start there. Have fun!

Posada Freud and Panchos on 5th are cool and kinda romantic... only having 100 feet to stumble in from the bar can be a plus for some people... Playa Maya rocks!

I think the search function is your best tool. This will let you match what type of hotel you are looking for with peoples specific comments.

We have been to PDC twice and stayed at Playa Maya both times. It is a magnificient place to stay, with an amazing staff and owners, great food, great location and great rooms. The hotel is small and very quiet which is a big plus in my book.

Once the reviews section really gets up and running it will be a great source of info for everyone. We are staying at the All Riviera Resort next, a hotel I know only a little about. I'm hoping to return with some detailed info for a review.

We checked out Playa Maya whenn we were down last. Considering it for next trip.
The girl at the desk was nice enough to show us some rooms and they look great.
Like the hammocks on the balcony. For location, you can't beat it!

Small hotel...

Looking forward to staying on the beach at Playa Maya in January. Stayed at Hotel Paradise in April which is not on the beach, but loved their pool area after a day of being a tourist. Very small, walking distance to downtown and only a few blocks to the beach clubs Tucan and Mamitas.

There are so many great hotels in Playa. I'd narrow it down by what your priorities are in a hotel room and what your price range is.

Also consider Hotel Lab Nah. Bare bones, buty very affordable...and very close to everything. Another little gem is the Hotel Hacienda Maria Bonita. I really liked this one. 50 bucks a night, small pool, great a/c, quite, a little further down and a block off the strip. Small parking, nice staff and round the clock security. We originally booked for two days and ended up here for a week. If you want to go a little more upscale and/or want to be on the beach...no doubt my first and favorite choice is the Playa Maya. Steve and his wife are wonderful and what a location! Good luck and happy hunting!
