Don't know if anybody missed these or not, but here goes. Great to be back, by the way.
Tough Test 10 1. A teacher has a total of 25 pieces of chalk. When a piece is used up to 1/5 of its original size, it gets to be too small for her to hold for writing on the blackboard, and she puts it aside. But the teacher hates wasting things and so, when she realizes she has enough of these small pieces to join and make another chalk of the same size, she joins them and uses the new piece of chalk. If she uses one piece of chalk each day, how many days would the 25 pieces of chalk last? 2. What’s the better-known name for Mrs. Francesco di Bartolommeo di Zanobi del Giocondo? 3. Bumper gives you money every day to put into your piggy bank. He gives you money in such a way that each day the amount of money in the bank doubles. If you already have one cent in the piggy bank, and Bumper gives you one cent the first day, two cents the second day, four cents the third day and so on, your piggy bank will be full on the 11th day. a) On which day will your piggy bank be half full? b) In addition to Bumper’s contributions, what if Mrs. B gave you one cent on the first day, two cents on the second day, four cents on the third day and so on, then on which day would your piggy bank be half full? 4. What currency did West Germany’s Deutschmark replace in 1948? 5. I drove my car East in a straight line for half a mile, and when I stopped, the car was facing West. How is this possible? 6. What’s the name of the canine hero in The Call of the Wild? 7. What would you always find in the firmament? Glass Water Stars Fish Numbers 8. Who played Steve Douglas on My Three Sons? 9. A man was born in 1969, and died in 1999 at the age of 73. How is this possible? 10. What five countries did Charles Lindbergh fly over during his epic flight? |

Okay, so here's the answers.
Tough Test 10 - Answers 1. The teacher uses 1 piece of chalk each day. Hence the total number of days it takes to use the 25 pieces of chalk is 25 days. Each piece of chalk leaves a remainder of 1/5 of its size...so 25 such short pieces are left. Since 5 such short pieces can be joined together to create a new piece of chalk, the teacher combines all the short pieces to produce 5 full-sized pieces, which can be used for an additional 5 days. Thus, she can use 25 pieces of chalk for 25 + 5 days. But, what about the leftovers of the chalks used over the last 5 days? They can be joined to form yet another piece of chalk...which means another day’s usage. So, the teacher uses the 25 pieces of chalk for a total of 31 days. 2. The Mona Lisa 3. a) Since the money in the piggy bank doubles each day, the bank will be half full the day previous to the day on which it is full. Thus, the piggy bank will be half full on the tenth day. b) If both Bumper and Mrs. B contribute equal amounts to the bank, then each needs to only make your piggy bank one quarter full. When both Bumper and Mrs. B contribute, the piggy bank will be half full two days prior to the day it would be full when only Bumper kicks in. Thus, the piggy bank will be full on the ninth day when both Bumper and Mrs. B contribute. 4. The Reichsmark 5. I drove the car in reverse. 6. Buck 7. Stars 8. Fred MacMurray 9. 1969 and 1999 are room numbers in the hospital in which the man was born and died. 10. USA, Canada (Newfoundland, actually), Ireland (Just a corner of it), England, France |
