I think there is a post on this already. I always forget the name of this super-rodent.

edit: I just looked around for that post but didn't find it. Hopefully denisea will help out. She is a more talented searcher. Mostly.

Might it have been a coatimundi? They're a rodent type critter, though much smaller than a badger. Face sort of like an opposum and a long tail, as I recall. Likely a picture on Google or some such place. I know they've been mentioned on other threads before. Might try a search under that name.

We saw a few at Royal Hideaway. We asked and were told it was a 'cireque' (saw-reek-ay).

So, whats that mean in spanish?

Sounds like it was an agouti, they look like a huge rat but very friendly. Here is a link I found in the search area. http://www.buddies.org/kvsource/cousins.html
Hope this helps.

yeah, those are the two names, but Bump, your description of a coatimundi sounds more like a tlacuache, which is just a possum.

There were a gazillion of those critters running around at Iberostar Quetzal. Definitely not a coatimundi. Sort of a cross between a rat (head and tail), squirrel (legs), and rabbit (body). I call them "Garden Rats".

Karen’s picture is an Agouti. Hopefully she can start calling them Garden Cavies or Garden Guinea pigs.

It would really make me cringe to read “I had a great vacation in Playa. We stayed at the Iberostar Quetzal. And the garden was full of rats.”

Agoutis are very common around Playa. We will often see them running around the lawns and wild areas in Playacar. They are fun to watch and have a much higher cuteness factor than either Opossums or Rats. I’m still trying to get a good picture of an Agouti. They are constantly on the move when they are out in public and as a result I have found them very hard to photograph.

there's a whole bunch of these little critters by the first ruins you see as you walk from PDC to Playacar (in kind of a stone walled hollow just south of paseo del carmen). I'm pretty sure they're called agoutis.

They look like R.O.U.S., from the movie "Princess Bride." Anyone know what that means?

I had a critter *no pun intended to "Critter"* that had a face similar to that of the tlacuache James posted but less hairy with a light grey/white coat outside of my apartment door a few months back. I at the time thought it was just a baby possum. It was not in the least bit afraid of me, and as I tried to get it away from the door so it would not run inside, it just sniffed around like I wasn't there. I even tried to push it away with my foot witch only resulted in it sniffing my shoe. I eventually had to pick the thing up and walk it down the stairs so I could get in. What was weird about it, was I live in central downtown, so I dont know where it came from, and why it was so unafraid of humans. Maybe it was someones pet, was kinda cute for a rodent, but in any event, I think it was one of the animals we are disscussing.

Close, Scotty, damned close. "Rodents Of Unusual Size" I agree...a terrific flick. The soundtrack was pretty damned good, wasn't it? Mark Knopfler at his best. That guy can play. Is Dire Straits dead? Haven't even seen anything solo from him in a while.
