Hundreds of thousands of people have done it and absolutely loved it. My advice would be to shop around and talk to the instructor who'll be taking your husband.
Take your time, choose wisely.

Barring any medical problems (you will be asked to fill in a medical questionnaire) the only barriers are mental and it helps if your husband feels at ease with the instructor because this will increase trust and bring those barriers down.
The emphasis is on enjoyment and making the students aware of what they shouldn't do - and why - rather than what they should do.
After all, scuba diving is nothing more than swimming and breathing underwater, it ain't superman stuff.

You could also ask a dive centre to email you the questionnaire in advance so you can learn which medical points are relevant.
