The ocean is not always calm here, there is no reef offshore (so no snorkling either) so no wave breaks, and the big waves are what has been eroding the beach to begin with. I wouldn't call the water here "calm", it really just depends. However, there are days when the ocean, in general, is calm. They will not take babies under age two, as stated here in their listing of their Baby Club:

Baby Club Team
  • First aid kit
  • Cribs
  • Refrigerator
  • Microwave oven
  • Baby bottle warmer
  • Bathtubs
  • Baby buggies
  • Toys
  • Paddling pool
  • Films
  • Sandpit
  • Puzzles
The Baby Club closes between 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm so the babies can have a siesta. Parents should provide nappies, swimming nappies, a change of clothes, swimsuit, sunhat, sun protection cream, and armbands or lifejackets.
If this is your child’s first time at the Baby Club, we kindly ask parents to call Ext. 4273 to make sure your child/children is/are OK.
Parents should notify the staff if their child has a special condition (allergies, taking medication, etc.) so a special eye can be kept on them.
For safety reasons, we ask you to provide proof of the baby’s date of birth, as the Baby Club is not equipped to accept children under the age of 2.

Sandos Caracol Beach is located north of Playa Del Carmen and the ocean is rougher in this area more often than not. Same situation applies with children, they won't take any under age 2.
and THAT is a great example why Shammy is the Most Helpful Peep!
