Hurricane Wilma, Tropical Storm Alpha Update

The Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida reported at 8 am on Oct 23, 2005 that Hurricane Wilma, now a Category 2 storm with 100 mph hour winds, has moved off the Yucatan Peninsula and is heading northeast at 8 mph toward Florida. The Hurricane is expected to cross the state of Florida to the north of Miami and south of Orlando.

Riu Hotels & Resorts reports that all guests of their five resorts in Playa del Carmen are safe and unharmed. The hotels are structurally sound and damage was mainly to the gardens and pool area. Phone lines in Playa del Carmen are starting to work. Hotel guests are able to go outside.

In Cancun, guests of Riu Hotels & Resorts were evacuated to public shelters prior to the storms arrival. Updates will be provided once communication is established.

Tropical Storm Alpha is located over the island of Hispaniola and both Haiti and the Dominican Republic are receiving rain from this storm. Tropical Storm Alpha is expected to continue north and move into the Atlantic with no landfalls in its future.

Updates will be posted on Riu dotcom as information is provided.

Riu says telephone lines are starting to work at PDC.

Another Mayan Palace Query

My fiance and I were planning to stay at the Mayan Palace from Nov. 13th - 19th. Any idea how they faired or if it will even be worth visiting? I read a report from Playa Maya that they would be accepting vistors as soon as the end of this week because a lot of the power is underground here. I heard another report that said the Mayan Palace has an onsite shelter. It is a new resort so I was wondering if the resort was built to withstand hurricane force winds.

Anyway, if anyone knows where I can get pictures of the damage to this resort or any updates, please let me know. I also read that it took 3 months to clean up after Emily and this storm was much worse. Any input on this?

We have heard that this is one area that you don't want to miss because it is so beautiful. Even after a hurricane, if the beach isn't completely washed away, I am sure it would still be nice. I have been happy to hear that there haven't been many fatalities in this area. They had really serious storm to suffer through.

Any Mayan Palace specific info would be appreciated.

Talk to your travel agent would be the best place to start.

Riu hotels update

This should probably be in the AI posting but it's still locked and I didn't want to bother our already overly busy Shammy with a p.m. so I'm putting it here....hopefully it hasn't already gone up elsewhere (don't want a slapped wrist!).

Good Morning, The Lovely Lady Lawyer and I are due to arrive on 11/21 at the RPR. Based on our experience with Emily, when we arrived 2 days after she left, I think you'll be OK. As Steve Ryberg just posted on another thread, PDC is coming alive again. On several occasions during all this, I have mentioned that the work ethic, resilence and focus of the local residents--both indiginous (spelling??) and transplanted--is awesome. They will see to it that PDC comes back "on line" as quickly as possible. Now, having said that, you should keep an eye on posts concerning the RPR because my input does not take into account what will happen if there has been major structural damage. I remain optomistic and will plan to see you at the bar on the 22nd. :cheers-st
