Is Mexico safe for travel? Yes, depending on your destination.

Finally, an article that gets it right.

My MIL, who went to Playa with us in JANUARY, is now convinced that they are making Americans leave all of Mexico (thanks to Fox News)

Better avoid Hollywood too.

Is it more dangerous here? Or here?

I LOVE IT!! I
Is that yours or a quote? Can I use it (on other forums, of course)?

BTW, one thing that the article touched on that I think we need to address here for future travelers (me included) is:
Do we need to have our legally-prescribed medications "re-prescribed" or verified by a Mexican doctor to be legal in Mexico?

Great article. Thanks for sharing. I also recently had a rude comment made to me by a stranger when talking about vacationing in Mexico. I simply replied, "the problems are in the border towns, not where I go" and left it at that. I agree, many parts of the USA are MUCH more violant then Playa del Carmen (as a part of Mexico). People can really be stupid sometimes. :doh2:

I found this article in our local newspaper in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

How safe is travel in Mexico? | StarTribune.com

I just realized this is the same article with the same author as Heather posted. I just hate telling everyone how safe it is in Mexico, because then they all will want to come to PDC.

Great article!

here is one I was sent by a friend, another writer who gets it

I hope the specifity offered by the State Department regarding travel to Mexico becomes part of their whole approach to travel advisories.

Thanks for providing the link Heather.

Anyone have any information on the college student that was hurt in Cancun? I read about it today either on CNN or Fox. Do not recall which one. It was not a favorable piece.:readpaper:

Couldn't find anything on CNN yet...did find something in a small paper that the kid was injured in a fall and is in a coma. His parents believe he was randomly attacked.

Without jumping to conclusions until I see a reputable source, I'll withhold any opinions, but I will say that alcohol-related falls are common in Cancun during Spring Break. I hope the kid gets well.

daydreamer 04-01-2010 09:16 PM

I seriously doubt any type of fall can cause the amount of damage that has been done. He was found in the grass, away from the pool or a balcony. Family Claims Rutgers University Graduate Was Severely Beaten In Cancun - cbs3.com

Bill & Billie 04-01-2010 09:18 PM

No, this was a college kid. He and his buddy had been to Cancun. When they returned he decided to sleep by the pool at the resort. Security found him 2-3AM with skull fractures. The report said he was in a grass area not far from the pool. Where he was laying they had ruled out a fall. He has been transfered I think to Florida. His condition last I read was critical.

However, as you and I both know. Just because it happened in Cancun doesn't mean an American isn't responsible.:read:

daydreamer 04-01-2010 09:23 PM

Also, just because the news reports say it happened the way they write it up, doesn't mean its truth. Ive personally experienced that here in the US.
