How we stumbled upon Playa

Cancun was one of the few places our city had direct flights to, so we went there a lot.
On one trip our hotel offered day passes to their Sister Hotel in Playa del Carmen. We'd never heard of it but we managed to get to it via ADO.
The walk from the ADO station down to the resort( I believe it was Porto Real)
was more enjoyable than the resort itself.
We were hooked and never stayed in Cancun since( about 15 years).
We drive by the Hotel Zone every trip on our way to Isla , and I ask the wife if we should take the Scenic Route through the zone for old times sake..... nope.
Not knocking Cancun... it was a lot of fun, but our tastes have changed since stumbling onto Playa.

Thanks for sharing. I know how some of the others found Playa from the forums over the past three years but it is always cool to hear how it happened.

Mine is more common I think, I was researching our future honeymoon in 2010 and came across a deal for The Reef Playacar (AI). The price was awesome so I dug deeper into the resort which led to researching the town which ended up making our decision for us. After two years at The Reef we are staying in town at Luna Blue for a week starting in about 17 days. For us the laid back atmosphere is what draw us back and lets us relax. While Playa is a tourist destination it doesnt feel that way to us when we are down. Now it looks like we will be coming down twice a year starting in 2013.

For us, it was my wife's suggestion we visit together in 2008. She had been to Playa in the late 1970s (boy was it ever a sleepy little town then!), and she wanted to share both it AND the convenient access to Mayan culture it offers with me. :D

It doesn't seem to make much sense for us to continue to visit down there, when you consider beach towns of Baja and western Mexico are ~2.5 hours closer and a little bit cheaper to get to by plane from here. But we've decided that, even so, we'll stay true to Playa when it comes to future Mexico visits!

We first visited Playa in 2004 at the suggestion of one of my husband's partners, who knew that we had become disappointed with Cancun having been there a few times in the 1990's. He suggested Mosquito Blue, which is where we had our first stay ( I need to add that there were many fewer places to stay in Playa and that was back when Mosquito Blue was a lot more on the "cheap" side)... and we've never looked back. I really think you're either hooked or not. We are. For life. :):)

I LOVE this thread -- would like to see everyone share their stories of "How I Met Playa Del Carmen" ... even you expats, PLEASE!!!

In 2004 on my first trip to Mexico I went to the Cancun Hilton. Didn’t care for Cancun much but I met a beautiful lady there who was from Cocayoc, (near Tepoztlan). Neither one of us spoke any of the other’s language- no matter, we liked each other.

One day we get into a taxi to go to the Isla Mujeres ferry. About half way there she says something to the taxi driver. He makes a u-turn. Next thing I know we are in Playa at the ferry to Cozumel. I didn’t see much of Playa that day but it stuck in my mind.

After that trip I made about 30 more trips to Mexico, none to Playa though. In 2010 I thought I should return to Playa to see something new. Been there 8 or 10 times since and hope to be back soon!

First stayed in the Riviera Maya for my honeymoon 4 years ago. I'd read and heard of this town "Playa del Carmen" from this awesome message board I would stalk from time to time. :D:D
I decided to make a day trip to playa during our stay at our resort. We fell in love with the town and the gorgeous turquoise beach! I said to the new hubby we're returning to this town our next vacation! Well, 4 years later we're finally returning and staying IN Playa! Can't wait!!! Only a couple more weeks to go.

I had been to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo numerous times with my family and two kids. In 2004 we were planning another trip to MX and my daughter suggested Playa. I didn't want to go at first because I thought it would be just like Cancun, but she persisted and won and we were all very happy she did. We've been there 6 times now and plan to return as often as we can. We all love Playa and the people we've met there from this forum!
