Tequila Barrel - Stop the Presses

I just heard that the Tequila Barrel will close in 2 weeks (since this is Mexico, that means 3 to 4 weeks :joker:).
Demolition first followed by the construction of a 3 floor building (since this is Mexico, that means 4 to 5 floors :joker:).
Was told a casino with a bar. Above the first level, who knows. Hotel rooms for the whales? And I always thought casinos were not legal in Mexico :joker::joker:
But since this is Mexico, maybe all FAKE NEWS. Ask The Donald.:ohno:
FAKE NEWS or not, you heard it here first!

Thats sad to hear. I made more than a few pesos in that back room... And they surprisingly made a very good margarita.

If this is true it will mean there is no reason to go to 5th ave for a beer and a ball game now that Ez and tequilla barrel are closed. Only reason to hit 5th will be for the famous Weed -Blow buddy that they seem to think everybody wants.

EZ recently reopened as TACO CITY CAFE. The owner of TACO CITY (there are now 4 locations in Playa), Angel, is a great guy and formerly managed EZ Sports for Osama (EZ's owner and now back in Canada). There are still many T.V.s in T.C.C. that are showing sports. I would guess that you can request games that you might want to watch.
And Tequila Barrel holds many great memories to me as I started going there in 2001 and still have my Collectors Edition (:joker:) Tequila Barrel VIP 20% Local's discount card, #121 that I received in the early 2000's. And I earned it :gulp-belc:curling::cheers-st:drunkfall

We went to TB in 2003 and 2004. After that not near as much. Good platform for people watching. Kathy always thought that one of the women walking down 5th in stilettos might break an ankle.

I'm here in playa now. I also was talking to the manager at TB who said the same. Will be closed down in several weeks and a 4 story casino was going up. Another playa landmark gone... very sad

Very very sad indeed. it was always a fun time when I went there with my friends. Are the TB owners going to be involved with the new building or totally new owners? 5th is certainly changing by the year. The location and vibe of the tequila barrel were always great. Will definitely miss it.

Tequila Barrel for many years was (and probably still is) one of the best, if not the best, place for people watching on AV. 5.
And for many years they played the best rock and roll tunes. And I am talking about from the early 2000's to several years ago, at least IMO.

The TB was/is a good place to watch an NFL game.....food was good and you get the local discount.

Little on the dramatic side, aren't you? If the survival of Playa was predicated on the existence of a dive beach bar and a tourist-trap tequila bar, that would be sad. Places come, places go. I remember when the sale of the Beer Bucket signaled the end. A Burger King opening on 5th was one signal for the end of days. It didn't last long. Wasn't there a TGIF that people said would Americanize Playa to its core? Belly up. Quinta Alegria was a signal that the town was now too high end and would soon be Cancun South. Now, it is just something that is on the corner. When that goofy white-haired TV chef opened his restaurant, it was only a matter of time. Now lots of people love that place. It has become, for some, what the Tequlia Barrel used to be.

In all my years here, I cannot count how many times I have heard that "this is it! RIP Playa!" Yet, the place keeps growing and somehow manages to keep its eclectic vibe, hardworking people and sense of community. In many ways, it is better. In some ways, it is not. A bar closing is not going to make one iota of difference.
