Is buying an emergency generator worth it?

Was thinking of buying an emergency generator, but am just about to decide that it isn't worth the cost, even though I got a really good deal - $5000 pesos - on a new John Deere AC-G7500H generator. It just doesn't seem to be worth the outlay to keep two refrigerators, a couple of ceiling fans (I've got an air conditioner but seldom use it), and an exterior night light running, even if power is out for a couple of weeks. Checked Consumer Reports, and did the math (which says, at that pretty good price, to go ahead and buy it) - but I'm still a bit leary. What am I missing - what else should I be considering? Got any generator owner's/user's experience to share? Thanks

i guess it all depends where you live,,,in all the 17 winters i have spent in playa in centro region, we have had very few power outages that lasted more than a few hours....with that said i did know only 1 person who had 1,,and it was stolen from her....i guess if your in the outback areas ,,,,or need it for power to building off grid, then id say buy it....otherwise id pass on it

make sure its not hot...lol

The actual need? We haven't had a hurricane here in over 10 years and the last two (both cat 4/5s), the power was out around three days. And that was when most power lines were above ground. If it gives you a sense of calm, the price is pretty good. I, personnaly, don't know anyone that has one but I am sure there are some people who do, especially in Playacar.

I like having a generator around. I had one during Wilma, wired direct to my palapa. I was glad I did for we had no CFE for 8 days. I don't have one now.

Be careful, there are quite a few of the same generators around here that are Chinese made with John Deere, Champion and other well known brand names on them.

If you decide that you don't want it, I will take it if it is a John Deere. Send it my way:clap::clap::clap:

If you have no need to run two refrigerators, then I doubt you need a generator. But, why have 2 refrigerators if you don't need them?

The thing that stopped me from buying is you can't run a computer off a standard generator because of too much power surging.

Ususally the invertor based generators are much better they usually produces something close to sine wave. Laptops can nearly run on anything though.

Thanks Harold - this is what I was most concerned about. Don't have a laptop though, just a surge-susceptible desk tower.

Surge protectors don't work? i bought them for all our electronics. Except our modem. It got fried in the storm a few weeks ago...

I have a big one, used it once when power was out for a few hours just to check my wiring. Was nice but mine is 12500 max and is LOUD. Do I need it? Yeah, I think I do. Enough so that I will buy the John Deere as a back up if it is available...!

beam-eye 09-12-2017 04:11 PM

Thanks for the good advice(s). Sounds like a generator is a great thing to have when you need it, which is, of course, the whole idea - and if I live long enough there may well be another Wilma...So I'll go ahead and get it, prudence being the necessity that it is in these parts. Thanks all.
