• We leave Playa del Carmen no later than 7.30 am.
• On the ride to Chichen Itza you will learn more about the history of the Mayan people and the area we travel through. Before getting to Chichen Itza we will have a sandwich to give us the energy we need to see this amazing ancient city.
•
On our visit to Chichen Itza, the grandest of ruins in the Yucatan, you will learn more about Mayan life and traditions. On our three hour visit we will cover both the south and the north part of the site. A local site guide specialized on Chichen Itza will join us.
• After our long visit to the ruins, a refreshing dip in a cool cenote is heavenly. Cenote X'keken is a spectacular underground cave in the jungle, filled with crystal clear freshwater and decorated with amazing limestone formations! The cenote will clear our heads, cool us off and give us a healthy appetite, just in time for our late lunch.
•
Next stop is the small colonial town of Valladolid, one of the first towns the Conquistadors built in the Americas. By the quaint Zocalo (the main square) we will enjoy authentic Mexican food served with fresh fruit drinks. We'll have some free time to stroll around town a bit.
• On our way home there may be time to stop in one of the little Mayan villages to pick up some beautiful handicrafts.
• We will be back in Playa del Carmen at around 7.30 pm.
Designed for people who 'don't do tours'
This full day trip, brought to you by Yucatreks, gives you the chance to see one of the most fascinating ruins in the world - Chichen Itza. Add a visit to the old colonial town of Valladolid and a swim in an amazing cenote and you have a day full of marvels. While this tour is a long day, we will take care of you very well and ensure you have a comfortable, fun experience!
Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is arguably one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the world. It has been appointed a World Heritage site by UNESCO and was recently declared one of the new 7 ancient Wonders of the World!
This vast Mayan city was constructed in waves, thus exhibits excellent examples of different Mayan architectual styles. Chichen Itza was one of the Mayan World's most important cities, which is evident in the many monumental buildings, including the famous pyramid and the largest ballcourt in the Mayan World. You'll find a more detailed description of the site in this Chichen Itza article.
The Day
We start the day early in an attempt to avoid the midday heat and beat the crowds. Chichen Itza covers a pretty large area and we make sure that you get to experience this fantastic ancient city at a leisurely pace. In fact, a Playa.info tour is more like being shown around by friends, having a good time. We make sure you get to see it all and we will not rush you. The most important thing is that we enjoy our day.
Cenote and Valladolid
The next stop on the itinerary is a visit to an amazing cenote, where we get to cool off after our visit to Chichen Itza. It’s called X'keken, located in the village of Dzitnup, and one of the grandest cenotes on the Yucatan peninsula.
One unusual sidebar to this tour is the often-requested stop at the Valladolid prison, where you can purchase some of the best quality hammocks in the Yucatan, handmade by prisoners.
An added value to our tour is the truly authentic Yucatecan meal we have at the food market by the main square in Valladolid, one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas. You'll get to try any antojito you want - tostadas, panuchos, salbutes, tacos, quesadillas and the Valladolid specialty, a sausage called longaniza. This is a real Mexican experience and super tasty! We'll also have time to stroll around the quaint colonial town square (El Zocalo) and perhaps do some shopping.
